“What is a Parrot Head?”
Carol Ewald, President of the Santa Barbara Parrot Head Club, wrote this poem to express her thoughts on the situation:
What is a Parrot Head? they ask when we appear in mass
What makes you wear those crazy clothes and imitate an ass?
The answer is not simple but then again, it is
Tis really just a frame of mind around Jimmy Buffett’s biz.
It’s sitting in a traffic jam and picturing a beach,
A far off island in the sea that’s just beyond your reach
A flowered shirt, a crazy hat, a cheeseburger in hand
A beach chair at an awesome park with a Trop-rock music band.
By day we may be doctors and lawyers and don a 3 piece suit
By night the margaritas flow and grass skirts sure look cute
With sailing songs and steele drum beats the stress can melt away
And if you haven’t tried it, don’t knock it as they say.
We celebrate the pirate life, the hula girls and rum
A bunch of crazy drinkin’ folk we have been called by some
Dancing barefoot, squeezing limes, it is a Tropical circus
But hold the bashing and keep in mind, we Party with a Purpose.
So welcome to this phlocking and we hope that you’ll be kind
Beyond the beaks and feathers you will certainly no doubt find
The greatest bunch of people that take charity to heart,
That welcome anyone that has the urge to play a part.
Fins Up everybody! ~ CE

W.O. SMITH SCHOOL OF MUSIC

The W.O. Smith/Nashville Community Music School, Founded in 1984, is a nonprofit educational institution created for the purpose of making quality music instruction available to talented, interested, deserving children from low income families at the nominal fee of 50 cents a lesson. The school also seeks to encourage student participation in the cultural life of the community through concert attendance and performance.
Instruction is provided by a 100 member volunteer faculty of area musicians. Over 350 students ages 7 to 18, representing academic schools from across Metro Davidson County and middle Tennessee area, participate in over 500 different courses. Students must qualify for the reduced or free lunch program in the Metro schools to take lessons.
The school is housed in the inner city at 1414 and 1416 Edgehill Avenue. These two houses, renovated in 1995, provide 10 teaching studios, computer theory laboratory, waiting room, listening and homework areas and administrative offices. More than 150 instruments are loaned each year to students, along with instructional materials and music, at not additional cost. The school is supported by gifts and grants from foundations, arts councils, individuals, and corporations.
NEW LEASH ON LIFE (formerly Wilson County Humane Association)
New Leash on Life is dedicated to improving the welfare of companion animals in our community through shelter, placement, spay/neuter, education and awareness.
Our goals include the following:
* To educate the public about the importance of having their pets spayed or neutered, and to provide low or no cost surgeries for those in need.
* To shelter and provide care for stray, abused, or relinquished animals.
* To educate the general population about the seriousness of pet overpopulation.
* To end euthanasia as a means of controlling pet overpopulation.
* To find good homes for the animals in our care.
Our hope for the future is that there will be no unwanted, unloved or abandoned companion animal. We will continue with our aggressive spay/neuter campaign and our owner education programs in the hopes that any pet ever adopted will find a permanent, loving home. We believe that with the involvement of our community we will make a significant impact on the welfare of companion animals, but we need your help and understanding. Together, will make the difference.
CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS

Each month the club will collect used cell phones, cell phone batteries, chargers and other accessories to donate to Cell Phones for Soldiers. For each item donated, this organization will donate a one hour pre-paid international calling card to a service member serving overseas to help them to keep in touch with their loved ones back home. So clean out your junk drawers and put those old phones to good use!
EMPTIES 4 CASH
![]()
At each meeting, the club will collect used inkjet toner cartridges to send to Empties 4 Cash for recycling. Not only does this help to keep them out of the landfills, but they will also pay us for them – the amount paid depends on the type of cartridge. The members of the club will decide how that money is to be used.
POP TOPS FOR THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES
At each meeting, we will have an opportunity for you to donate the pop tops from beverage, soup and pet food cans. When we fill the donation bucket, we will turn them in to The Ronald McDonald House, who in turn, will recycle them to earn funds for the charity. The Ronald McDonald House Charities provide a “home away from home” environment for families of ill children who are receiving treatment at a hospital that may be far away from their real home. So don?t risk a blown out flip-flop and a cut heel – donate those pop tops!
